  1. For the Vietnam MEmorial a very effective way to show people about it would be to have interviews with veterans and pictures from that time, since it's so different than the times now.

  2. Another effective way to show people how the Vietman War still affects people today is to show pictures of people at the memorial looking for their loved ones name and leaving flowers at the memorials in memory of their loved ones. People at the memorial could also be interviewed because children and grandchildren visit daily and can give another perspective that veterans would not be able to give.

  3. It would be interesting and beneficial to have the screenplay of Apocalypse Now playing at the memorial site to inform visitors of the history of the Vietnam War. Or at least to provide clips from the film to enlighten visitors.

  4. I think that adding more pictures would be a really good idea. You could have pictures of vietnam war veterans then and now, and maybe even have some of them tell their stories or at least quote them.

  5. It would also be interesting to show pictures of the Vietnamese to illustrate how the war was a huge tragedy for both sides.

  6. showing the Vietnamese side is a really good idea, having pictures from not only Vets today, but using old war photos side by side might be a good way to contrast the two eras.

  7. In response to showing how the war affected both countries tremendously, I think it would be a good idea in the MEmorial to give updates on people of the area and places where the battles took place. It would be interesting to see how Vietnam has recovered since the war. It would also be interesting to see if some of the damage has been left and not been repaired since the war. This could be done through video footage or through photographs.

  8. The idea of video footage and old war photos is great. As well as, the perspective of both sides, which most people don't look at when reflecting on previous wars. Another idea is to really go into the history of the war, resolution, and impact now. All sides are important to understand and would give more of an appreciation for those who fought in the war.

  9. Going into the history of the war and impact is a great idea. I believe another great thing to do would be to take the collection of letters that are left at the memorial and make them anonymous and display them for people to read. I have been to this memorial multiple times and the letters family members leave behind are what make this memorial alive and real to me. They leave them displayed for all to read there but after a day or two they are collected and gone. Keeping a collection of these would really reach to the hearts of others.

  10. Definitely, they could attach files to the website and make them easy to access (you wouldn't have to travel up to the memorial to read them). I also think the site could feature a "virtual wall" where visitors could scroll through and see all the names on the website, and even be able to click on them and learn more about them (at least those that we know enough about). A big project, but it could be really cool.

  11. I agree that going into the history of the war and the impact of the war is a great idea. The Vietnam War was a war that many Americans did not support. By going into the reasons behind fighting the war, you may be able to give many people a new perspective of the war and maybe change their opinion of the war.

  12. I think it would also be interesting to interview some of those people who were young war protesters now that they are grown and see how they feel today. It would also be neat to have an interview with a soldier talking about how it felt to know that so many American's didn't support the war they were fighting.

  13. Having the soldiers speak out about how they felt about fighting a war that was not supported by some people in their own country would be very interesting. It would be neat to know if they still think it was a valid choice to go to war or if they should have neglected. Since people's opinions change over time, the protestors & soldiers sides would definitely be neat to see how they compare.

  15. Because this war occurred before our time, I think old video footage and pictures should take up a large sum of the MEmorial, if there was access to such. I also think interviews with people that were pro-war and anti-war would be interesting so that we could see why they felt the way the felt, and how they feel about the war now, being so far behind us. The MEmorial should also include a way to look up a name and show where it is displayed on the actual memorial in D.C. Family members of the person could upload a short bio about their loved one, so people today could see what type of people were fighting the war.

  16. I like Laura's idea of being able to find someone on the memorial by some sort of search que. Including a short biography of all the victims and fighters would allow us to see why the people were fighting for their country and also how old they were. We don't notice this, but many of the soldiers in the Vietnam War were young boys, who were risking their lives.

  17. I really like the idea of a search que since so many people were affected, this would be an easier way to locate someone. I think in order for people to really understand the struggles that people went through during the Vietnamese War, they must understand the time in which they lived. Background information will give insight to those who are clueless. It will show just how significant this war was, and what people went through to get through it. Old video footage and commentary of victim family members and survivors would be a great way to demonstrate these struggles.

  18. I like to see names match up with faces, so having a MEmorial where the names of all the soldiers could link to a photo and some information about that person would help me to better appreciate the soldiers. A book of quotes similar to the quote by Michael Herr would be a great way to memorialize peoples honest opinions on the war. Not necessarily quotes from newspapers or books, but quotes from letters that soldiers sent to love ones or quotes in soldiers journals.

  19. I agree with David that showing photos from both sides would be interesting. Veterans could also be there to explain the photographs because as we have learned in class people interpret images differently so having that clarity could be beneficial.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think putting faces and information to names is great and to further this I think that a biography including where the person came from and who survives them would be good too. This way you could search for Vietnam veterans by state or by name.

  21. I think that the idea of a virtual wall is really great, because even if someone couldn't make it to see the memorial they could still see the things people posted about their loved ones. Along with Ben's idea of wanting to see the faces, they could post biographies and pictures about the people of who they were writing about on the wall, and you could just click one name and see everything about them (i.e.. how they died, what their life was like, their picture, and what people had written about them). It would just bring the memorial to an even more personal level.

  22. Along with bringing personal touches to rememberance of American soldiers, the Vietnamese lost in this was should also be recogized and remembered. THe Vietnamese people suffered far greater losses in this conflict than did America and a perhaps a photo gallery and bios of Vietnamese soldiers and their lives. Also pictures of the physical damamges sustained by the vietnamese, during and after war as well as throughout the rebuilding process over these past decades, are important facets to remember about this war too.

WOW. i am truly appalled by Jeff.I cant honestly believe that you think Vietnamese soldiers belong on this memorial. Are Nazi's in the WW2 Memorials? NO. Is there a huge statue of Oswald next to the Lincoln Memorial? NO. That is probably the most un-American thing I have ever heard and I am 100 percent disgusted by you. You are in serious need of an attitude change.

Please explain to me what you would say to a Veteran, who put his life in danger for you to be able to be un-American. And as he travels across the US to DC to see the memorial of his best friends. When he gets there he sees the faces of the gooks who shot at him, and wanted to kill him for about three decades. The faces of all the zipperheads who killed those noble Americans, which he traveled across the country just to see. Please explain this to me. And please think next time.

  24. I think all of these suggestions are great. Though I understand that it is important to honor the American soldiers who sacrificed for us and our country, it would be ridiculous to act like the Vietnamese citizens and country as a whole did not sustain great losses. Though they were our rivals in the war, I think it would be important to include information on them, even if it is just a small space, because they were an important part of the war as well. I think personal stories would be great to share and memorialize as well.

  25. I really like the idea of a virtual wall where you could scroll through and look at the names, which would link to each person's bio, etc. Another feature to add to this would be a place that would show you where their name was located on the actual wall at the memorial in DC. This way, a family could look up online where their loved one's name is before they go, instead of having to search for it when they go there for the first time.

On another note, yes, the Vietnamese did suffer great losses during the war, but I in no way believe that they deserve a spot on this memorial. This is America, not Vietnam. Every battle our country has fought caused losses for the other side, but they can be recognized in a memorial in their own country, not ours. I think our veterans would be offended by the inclusion of Vietnamese on the memorial.

  26. Because the majority of the victims in the Vietnam War were close to our age, a way to make the memorial more impacting would be to integrate interviews of college-aged students on their thoughts of the Vietnam War, and how they would feel if they were put in such a situation. The pictures of victims would make the memorial much more personal. Seeing their loved ones face each time a family member visits the memorial would evoke honor and pride in them much more than seeing their name.

  27. The virtual wall mentioned earlier is a very good idea. Also, interviewing college-aged students as Kathleen mentions is a very interesting suggestion because I bet most people don't think too much about it these days. Pictures and video would be very useful for this MEmorial. Also, some basic background information or a history of the war would be good so people truly understand what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I completely agree with Kathleen. That is such a great idea to integrate interviews of the college-aged students in the memorial. It would be really cool to see how other students across the country feel about this past event in America's history. I think that having a list of the victims hometown and home state would also be a cool feature. I think seeing that a victim was from where you are from would evoke pride in a different type of way.

  29. I think that adding some things about the Vietnamese side of the war is important but focusing on the Americans who died is the main point of the MEmorial. Also I found it interesting that there are new names being aded to the Memorial that were discovered and I think it shows how much it means that the park is dedicated to being so accurate that it would add these missing names.

  30. I think that the virtual wall was a really good idea. With the incorporation of interviews from soldiers that survived and hearing their stories about their experiences and everything that they had sacrificed would be very moving.

  31. The virtual wall that would allow you to search for veterans is my favorite idea from the earlier posts. I think it would allow people to learn more information about each individual than an actual wall could possibly present. I also like the idea of including pictures of the individuals because it puts a face with a name and connects the viewer with the veteran.

  32. First and foremost, I think it is very important to honor all of the men and women who have/are served/serving our country. With regards to the MEmorial, I think the more information/ personal recognizance--the better. I really like the virtual wall idea. It would probably take a lot of time and effort to find the information/pictures on every soldier, but I think it would be worth every second. They sacrificed their lives for our country, so the least we can do for them is make a nice memorial to honor them.

  33. I agree with Will, that we should make a nice memorial to honor them. I think the first step to improve the current government made MEmorial would be to design a more user-friendly website. I think that a good idea would be on the home page, to have an "Announcements" section. Because of all of the updates, events, and new announcements in different sections of the website, it is important to make these new announcements easy to find.

  34. I think the virtual wall idea is a good one. The people enlisted in the Vietnam war were all college and some highschool students, and if there were interviews with kids the same age as the ones who fought and died for our freedom I believe it would show a lot of respect.

  35. I like the idea of the actual wall that pays tribute to the victims of the Vietnam war because you can visually see the list on ongoing names and it makes you reflect and think about all the people who lost their lives. But I also think for the people that can't make it out to visit the actual memorial that a virtual wall may be a good idea. That way, they can get an idea of how many people lost their lives and view more details of that person like the specific job they did or whatever else.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Possibly included with the names of those who lost their lives could be photos of the service men and woman so that a face can be matched with that name. Also including details like their specific job is a good idea.

  37. Just as Hilary touched on, I would compound the MEmorial's effect on those who see it by including the historical relevancy of the veterans, so that their importance can be ever glorified by their contributions in the war. Even data concerning other veterans and their connections with other veterans would be significant.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Having a link on the MEmorial website to enable Vietnam Veterans to connect with one another. This could led to an external site, or it could simply be a blog within the website itself. If Veterans were able to upload their own stories or comments on parts of the war, it would give the MEmorial a much greater meaning. It was made for Veterans and edited by Veterans.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree that allowing the Vietnam veterans to connect with one another can bring advantages to the website . Simply adding a link that would allow them to blog , add personal stories , comments and photos could be useful. It can bring a much greater meaning to the MEmorial while serving a purpose . Especially if it was made and edited by fellow veterans .

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would like to see more of the fallen soldier and, maybe have information about there lives so that others could really connect with them in a more personal way

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with creating information about the fallen soldiers, it would help have closure for fellow family members. I would also add photos of veterans and a blog spot showing respect for those veterans.

    ReplyDelete
  42. i agree with the placement of the actual reasons behind the war because the war was such a controversial issue at the time and we never actually understood the purpose of the war, all we knew were that an enormous amount of lives were lost.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Creating an information page on the fallen soldiers is a good idea. However I would create a page that is dedicated to real Viatnam veterans. Also I would have a page on how the war effects the family members of veterans.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think creating an information page on the fallen soldiers is a good idea and that this would help more families know there heritage and were they come from and also have a page on each branch and the soldiers that served
